How I Keep Track of Domains in Airtable

I buy a lot of domains. If I've got an idea for a project, I want the domain. Even if the project takes years to materialize.

Years ago, I bought domains through GoDaddy (as one does). Later started buying through Cloudflare. Even bought some through Namecheap to save a few bucks.

I realized that I needed a centralized place to keep track of my domains. So I built a tracking system in Airtable. [affiliate link*]

What I include in my domain tracking system

The table itself is pretty straightforward.

It includes:

• URL of the domain
• Status: Either "Done" (domain is in use on one of my websites), "Unlinked" (domain is not in use), or "Redirect" (domain redirects to another domain)
• Hosting: GoDaddy, Cloudflare, or Namecheap
• Expiration date of the domain
• Renewal Cost that I expect to pay
• Renewal Status: Either "Active" (I plan to keep the domain), "Non-Renewal" (I plan to abandon the domain), or "Expired" (I let the domain registration lapse and no longer own it).

What I do with this information

If you only own one or two domains, you probably look at my list and wonder why I have so many.

But if you are also a person who obsessively buys domains, you get me. I actually have 18 domains in this list, including domains owned by my spouse and teenager.

Here are a few ways this tracking system keeps me organized.

Renewal reminders

ICANN requires domain registrars to send you two notifications: one month and one week before renewal. So far, that's worked. I can decide if I'm going to let a domain lapse, or update my Airtable tracking once the renewal has occurred.

However, if I thought I needed more time (say, two months), I could set up email reminders through Airtable.

Website projects

I have started vibe coding my own websites. If I continue to do this, I'll probably add another column to the GitHub project where my web files are stored.

Domain registrar tracking

I'm trying to consolidate domain registrars (to Cloudflare). As domains come up for renewal, I'm moving them. This list helps me see which domains are still with other registrars.

Redirects

I sometimes buy similar domains for the purpose of redirecting. Or, I also have a really old domain that I still own that redirects to a newer domain. I can keep track of the redirects here.

I have a Status of "Redirect" and then a column that isn't displayed showing the redirected URL.
